David's Blog

Since April, 2004, Louise and I have hosted 5-day Sabbath rest retreats for full-time pastors, encouraging each married pastor to bring their spouse with them. We have been blessed to provide this gift of Sabbath rest to over 530 pastors and pastor spouses to date! God has called us to this ministry. And, it has truly been a “God-thing” throughout!    Read More...

Soul Restoration and Physical Rest

One of the books we recommend reading is, For God’s Sake, Rest! Discovering the Pleasure of His Rest (see our Resources page). The author, Jim Anderson, has really captured the dilemma I believe many, if not most, pastors are in today. They do not spend sufficient time for soul restoration and needed physical rest. Speaking out of personal experience, Jim writes, “If my life is going to clearly reflect the image of God, I am going to have to learn how to rest. Rest is of value to both God and man. The writer of the Pentateuch . . . points out that the life of God and man intersects during periods of rest.” Our theme chapter for DRM is Psalm 42. The passage begins with the psalmist lamenting, “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?” (Psalm 42:1-2 ESV). So, pastor, what have you found that best provides the thirst-quenching soul restoration and physical rest your life requires?
